The East Texas Balloon Festival is such a neat treat each year. This year, we enjoyed it in some new ways. Jamie introduced us to the real competition of the event. I thought the balloon races were just races for speed. In actuality, the balloonists are flying for accuracy, dropping a flag on a target. We joined the Longs at a school parking lot to watch the balloons swoop right over our heads and aim for their targets. It was an awesome display! Then the next morning, we headed to he airport to watch it again. It was so fun to munch on donuts and watch the colorful specs on the horizon drift toward and over us, dropping their flag on the target. I really enjoy the balloons because they are just pure delight - colorful, big, slow, and purely fun! Even the balloonists themselves don't take this hobby terribly seriously, but just enjoy it for the total recreation and delight to the senses that it is.
What I do NOT enjoy is getting fire ant bites in the grassy field as we watched. Seriously - they are terrible little creatures. The bites itch, hurt, and swell for at least 3-4 days/nights. Ugh.
But the balloons sure were pretty!
