Independence Day
Today was Barbados Independence Day. Holiday! We spent the morning at Bath Beach, playing in the sand and enjoying the windy morning. Here are a few shots -

Precious footprints -

Isaiah had been searching for live crabs, but he was pretty stoked to find this big claw! He wanted to bring it home for his treasure box, but we told him he had to leave it. Being the sweet soul that he is, he wanted to be sure to find a spot to put it where someone else could find and enjoy it -
I adore this boy -

And I'm crazy about this guy, too -
As far as celebrating Independence Day, it seems that the only special tradition is to eat conkies. They are like a tamale, except the inside is made with cornmeal, coconut, pumpkin, raisins, and spices, and it is wrapped and steamed in a banana leaf. You can't buy them in the stores, you have to buy them from people selling them along the roadside or in front of grocery stores. My Caribbean cookbook says they are something made in November by housewives. We tried them a few days ago and thought they were alright, but not something we'll be anxious to eat again. Other than eating conkies, it seems the whole island just enjoyed not working and "liming" at the beaches, parks, and roadsides.
