4th of July
We had a sweet 4th of July celebration. We've become accustomed to not being on American soil for this holiday and haven't done much to celebrate it in the last 5 years. This year, however we enjoyed the holiday with our American friends from church. I wasn't even sure Isaiah knew the colors of the American flag (I know, shameful), but he did. Together we made a few decorations as well as red velvet cupcakes on Saturday. After church, we made it home just before God gave us His own fireworks show in a huge thunderstorm. I don't think I've ever been so close to lightening! We enjoyed watching the rain pour down and feeling the thunder rumble. Then, our sweet patriotic friends came over for a real American-style bbq of hot dogs, hamburgers, beans, coleslaw, and cupcakes. My friend Stephanie searched high and low to find sparklers for the kids and she finally found a little party shop in Bridgedown that sold them (for about $1 each!). Fireworks are banned in Barbados, but I guess you can find sparklers every once in a while. The kids loved them. Noelle napped through the festivities, so she got to do her first sparkler in the evening after her bath. We look forward to someday sitting out in a field on a blanket with KFC to ooh an aah over a big fireworks show, but we enjoyed our Bajan-style Independence Day!
