Luke had his first car accident. We're SO thankful that he's ok, but it was a bummer to smash up our dear mirror-window Mazda. It has been so dry here for so long that when there is even a bit of rain, the oil and gas from the roads comes right to the surface. Luke said it was like driving on ice all of a sudden and he rear-ended the car ahead of him. No one was hurt, but we have a big repair bill coming and 3 weeks of a rental car to pay for. But, again, we're very thankful that Luke walked away completely fine.
The good news is that all of our belongings are on the island! The bad news is that it isn't entirely easy to GET them. We thought our UK shipment would be in our hot hands yesterday. Luke went to Bridgetown for an 8am appointment to see our things and be present when the custom agents went through them. Unfortunately he didn't learn that the customs guys are on strike until he arrived, so there is nothing we can do to get our stuff at this point. They didn't anticipate the strike lasting more than a couple days. We really hope this is the case. We're getting anxious for our train set, high chair, camera charger, garlic press, and library...
And it is HOT. I know we aren't acclimatized yet, but all of the locals are also saying that it is unseasonably hot. Our new house will have an air conditioner in the tv room and we are really looking forward to that! Speaking of the new house, we really believe we'll be in this week. Really.
I've made a few Caribbean dishes this week - Coucou (cornmeal and okra dish), fried flying fish (Luke said it was the best thing I've ever made!), roasted breadfruit (if I could swallow it, maybe i'd like it), and coconut cake. Maybe when I'm set up at the new house with more access to internet and my own computer I'll do my own version of "Julie and Julia" except I'll only do the recipes I want to from my Caribbean cookbook and I'll do them at my own pace. And I'm NOT making the popular dish called Sous as the first step in the recipe is "Cut pig's head in half."

Hi, Holly!
I've been thinking about you quite a lot lately, and I've checked your blog from time to time ever since your mom mentioned that you write one. It's been fun to read about all of your adventures! :)
I think you're amazing. In the little bit of time that I got to talk with you when you were home, you really impressed me, and I wanted to share that with you. Your little family has been living through a lot of craziness and uncertainty during the past few years. I'm sure I only know a small part of what you've experienced, but you are a supercool person for being so flexible and so open-minded and for being brave enough to travel all over the world with your kiddos in support of your husband.
My life has taught me quite a lot about flexibility and uncertainty and about venturing so far outside my comfort zone that I can't even see its edge, but you are an inspiration to me, and even though I don't know you very well, I think of you when I'm faced with a challenge that I'm not sure I can endure. You must be a very strong person and an awesome mommy. You have thrived in the midst of incredible life changes lately. You make me want to be a stronger person. Remember that someone feels that way about you when you're having a discouraging day.
There's a piece of me that wishes my little family could be in Barbados with yours right now. I think we'd be good friends. :)
