Today was the much anticipated grand opening of Aldi's, a semi-discount, international grocery store, just down the road from our flat. I had no idea how many other people would have marked their calendars for this "Thursday at 9am" opening. It was packed! I should have known, though. The Scots are very frugal people, and I would venture a guess to say that no one really likes Tesco, where I usually shop. My friend, Rachel, and I loaded our boys up and hit the store about 11am. It was like a party! I felt silly about how excited I was about it all, but although St Andrews is a quaint, beautiful, historic town, it is still a small town, so the opening of a big, new store is a pretty big deal. There were bagpipers out front, balloons and FREE (very unusual around here) samples of food items, and the workers were HAPPY and HELPFUL. Plus, I found the long packs of RitterSport samplers that I used to eat in Germany all the time. Mmmm. I will be doing most of my shopping at this store now, I believe. It comes as a very welcome change to my twice-weekly trips to Tesco...
The other excitement for the day involves my sweet baby. A while back, a friend of mine told me that every mom has her "thing". For some, it is their kids falling off of things. For some, it is their kids getting sick. For her, it is skin cancer. If the sun's up, you can bet her kids have sunscreen and hats on. For me, my obsession... I mean fear... I mean "thing" is choking/suffocating. This includes choking on food or toys. It also includes suffocation by blankets, stuffed animals, or crib pads. And, it includes other air-restricting occurrences like asthma, croup, and allergic reactions. So, today when my sweet baby came crying to me, holding up his little hand and saying "bee!", I was really impressed with myself for not TOTALLY freaking out that he was going to go into anaphylactic shock. Poor baby still had the stinger in between his pinky and ring finger. I pulled it out, and he seemed to recover fairly quickly. His little arm got splotchy and his hand was red and swollen, so I did make a quick stop by the health center on the way home. It was on the way home, after all. The doc assured me that it was just doing what a bee sting does and not to worry about it. Although I hate that little booger that stuck it's stinger into my baby's hand, I am relieved to cross one more "potentially life-threatening allergen" off my list for Isaiah.

We also recently found out the hard way that Big Boy B isn't allergic to bees... several got stuck inside his clothes while playing in the back yard and he ended up with five stings! Poor guy... but at least he's fully recovered now.
Did you ply Isaiah with popsicles? that's what we did. :)
Congrats on the new grocery store... sounds very nice.
Can't believe Aldi FINALLY opened! Yay! Of course it waited until we were gone . . . sigh. I bet it was the first time an Aldi opened with bagpipes. :-)
Man - and I missed it...at least YOU were there to witness what we had all waited for - for SO LONG
