It's not easy being green

Today's St. Patrick's Day. Like I've mentioned in previous years, there is almost no acknowledgement of this holiday in Scotland. (I am curious to know what's going on a few miles away in Ireland...) No, the green-ness I'm facing today is the reduce-reuse-recycle kind. Here in the Kingdom of Fife, we're being forced to recycle. They have drastically cut our trash pick-up dates - cut them by half! We used to have trash collected weekly, and a paper/cardboard collection monthly. Now, they are each collected every other week. And, they will absolutely refuse to pick up your trash bin if it is overflowing. The lid has to be closed. I have felt guilty for a while about the bottles, cans, plastics, etc. that I shove into my trash can every week to 'throw away' into a dump somewhere. But, honestly, I confess that my guilt or sense of responsibility for caring for this big beautiful earth was not enough for me to store my recyclables and tote them into town to a recycling center. It is just too easy to pack everything into my trash can and pretend I don't know better. I really am thankful for being forced in to this habit. I hope it sticks for us - for our kiddos - and for their kiddos, too. Maybe you're not being forced to do it, but I encourage you today to DO something green in addition to wearing it - turn off a light, turn off the water while you brush your teeth, or maybe make a trip to your own recycling center. Kermit says it isn't easy, but I guess being a little bit green isn't really that difficult either.... Happy St. Patty's Day!
